Eight teams compete in the inaugural Challenge Playoff for a 50-over future.

Starting tomorrow in Kuala Lumpur, the first-ever Cricket World Cup Challenge Playoff will pit hosts Malaysia against seven opponents who are all vying to climb the ICC’s 50-over cricket 22 World Cup qualification ladder.

At the event, which will be the first iteration of the qualification competition since the ICC revealed the new CWC League system five years ago, four spots in the 2018 CWC Challenge Leagues will be up for grabs. Bermuda, Italy, and Vanuatu will compete to regain their places in the twelve-team, multi-year List A International Challenge Leagues alongside the hosts.

following each’s placement in the bottom two of their respective groups during the cycle before. After a ten-year break, three of the four new competitors—Kuwait, Bahrain, and Tanzania—are making their tournament debuts. Saudi Arabia was never present. They demoted four of the previous competitors  from the now-defunct World Cricket 22 League.

Through the T20I rankings, the later four secured their spot in the tournament. Kuwait and Bahrain qualified easily, while Saudi Arabia and Tanzania withstood challenges from Spain and Germany, who both lost out on a Playoff berth by a mere 4 rating points.

They divide the teams into two groups of four, and after one round of robin play, the worst team from each group advances. The remaining teams advance to the Super Six round, where they will square off against the teams from the other group for three additional matches apiece.

advancing their points in opposition to other teams that are still alive. They will award a spot in the future CWC Challenge Leagues  to the four teams at the top of the standings following the Super Six stage. Remarkably, the four teams demoted from the previous Challenge League season came on the same side of the draw once more.

Challenge League B relegates Italy and Bermuda to the other side of the draw alongside Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, while Malaysia and Vanuatu drop down from Challenge League A into Group A of the Playoff, where they will be joined by Bahrain and Tanzania.
